These site are good ones to begin and learn French, if you work hard enough you'll be able to reach an efficient level for daily life.

French is the ONLY language (apart from English) which is official, spoken, taught, learnt on the five continents.
It's mandatory at school in quite a lot of countries (where sometimes English isn't!)

just with notes: no

with notes and perhaps a cd or a friend: yes! reason is you need to learn to pronounce things. You may well learn to write and read it just with notes but one cannot learn to speak without hearing the other language, in this case French.

Mere notes will not be enough since French pronunciation and grammar are much different from English though the alphabet is the same with more accents for the vowels.
You must have a audio or visual CD for guidance.

Well the ones who are above say the whole thing. Yes go to your nearest book store, and check out your options. Make sure it is a big store that carried these books. If you live in Delhi, the C.P. has some good stores.

But I would suggest you go to the French Embassy, and see if they have any night courses. My son took french from 6 to 9th in high school and plans to continue with night courses, along with his BBA . It give you an extra advantage to know another language, beside Hindi and English.

You will need some CD's to get the pronunciation correct. Try "learn-in-your-car French ". It is a listen and repeat series of CD's. I use the Chinese set to learn Mandarin.
There are many other similar CD's but I think it is the best value.

PS I would steer clear of Rosetta Stone and other computer software programs. I have heard nothing but bad reports. about them. Read the reviews on Amazon.

sure, i don't see why not. The internet is a useful resource. You'll also need notes on pronounciation, or hear someone speaking to help. But yeah, you could learn the basics by reading.

I took five years of French and I can speak it ok...I can understand it well and I can write it pretty good. But...the best way to learn is with the Rosetta Stone cd's...they are expensive, like 275.00 but totally worth it.
