Engineer, you have lots more job security.
Trainmasters are company officers, no union protection and your security depends on making your superiors happy, usually they do not have as much vacation either.
Our best trainmaster was recently dismissed because he wasnt afraid to tell the division superintendant that he was full of sh*t. Which was true but he didnt like hearing it.
Locomotive engineer has its downsides but it is a better job for most people.

Locomotive engineer! You learn more than just controlling the train! And yes! They can reach a higher position with the knowledge they obtain in their training years. :)

Locomotive engineer if you want more money and overtime.
Trainmaster if you want a desk job with close to dependable hours.
