I have noticed in the past couple of weeks my 16 month old son prefers to walk on his tippy toes, rather than flat feet

but at the same time his right foot sometimes just gives way under him causing him to trip over.

Is this him just discovering he can walk on his tippy toes or could there be a problem.
have anyone elses child done this?

he has been walking competently since he was 10 months old without this happening

My daughter went through that too. I kept thinking that it was the cold floor, but she also did it on the carpet too. I decided to put hard walking shoes with ankle support, on her. It was not long thereafter, that she finally stopped.

I'm not sure if this is normal, but as you say, it might just be him discovering he can walk on his tippy toes. It shouldn't be a big deal, but if he continues doing it all the time you should jsut occasionally say, "walk normally or you'll get sore feet" or something.

By now he should be walking on his flat feet., but since you said that he had been properly walking since 10months and it has just started happening now maybe he is just discovering what he can do!
I would take him to the docs if you are worried.. Walking on tip toes can cause problems with a child feet and legs.
Your doc will advise you what to do and refer you to a specialist if that is what is needed.

My son (3 and a half) still does this from time to time. I think kids like to walk on their toes because they feel taller.

I personally don't think there's anything to worry about, but as one of the other answerers says, just mention it to your docs at your childs next checkup.

Just remember to mention this at your child's next check up.

In the mean time document when it occurs. May be nothing but it is always good to ask.
If there is a problem It is best to solve it while a child is young.
