Hotel in West LA?

For my birthday I decided to drive to LA and meet my boyfriend who lives in San Diego. So we're getting a hotel, but I don't know which ones are good or not. He wants one on the West side of LA. It's just going to be for a night or two, and we'd like a nicer one with good service. Are there any recommendations with general prices?

Yeh, I would check out the Lowes Hotel in Santa Monica..It's nice and near the Pier and the action...
