I was going to get a CZ rifle but I've located a great deal on a 983S and I like the way it looks a lot. So how is it? Any experience? Is it worth buying?

On an un-related topic, I was watching Shooter and was curious as to what a
"Cold Bore" shot is.

I'm 16 and I'm just starting to hunt again so I doubt I will be fiddling with the trigger mechanisms.

Marlins are great - I have three
That being said, I think Marlin has better quality than CZ - I've seen a lot that looks like army surplus with the rust and metal machine marks on guns right out of the box.

A lot of people are disapointed with the accuracy of a 22mag; but all things considering, a marlin should be just as accurate as any other 22mag on the market. I own a 17hmr so I have no need for the 22mag, but they have come out with the ballistic tip 22mag that should bring groups under 1" at 100 yards.

One thing about the Marlin is the heavy trigger in the 7 pound range. People on rimfire central have sworn by replacing the spring inside the trigger with one from a ball point pen.
I did that with a 880sq and the gun wouldn't stay ******, so I replaced it with a heavier spring from the hardware store and it works fine with a nice 3 pound pull.
I did that again with a 917 (heavier spring) and it worked fine for a year till this Fall when it slamfired.
So I would not call that a safe fix
There are mixed results (mostly good) with the rifle basix trigger.

I will say that with a decent trigger, I would go with Marlin over CZ.
You may want to look at Savage - it's very similar to the Marlin but a little cheaply made around the clip release. It's a solid rifle that should be cheaper than the marlin and has a better trigger with their accutrigger.
I think savage is at least worth taking a look at because it sounds like it could be an option for you.

I have no experience with the Marlin, but a cold bore shot is exactly that, a shot taken before the barrel heats up. When you go to the range, on some rifles more than others, you will notice that the first shot through a clean, cold barrel might be a little lower than where the rifle is zeroed. The second shot is little closer, then so on until the barrel heats up and stabilizes after a few shots. The reason for this, I believe, is the cold barrel absorbs a lot of heat, and this slightly lowers the pressure of the gases propelling the bullet making the bullet come out a little slower then it otherwise would.

I have a Marlin 982 .22 WMR. It is very accurate, and will outshoot several of my centerfire rifles. Functions well too. Go for it. Cold bore refers to where a rifle will place its first shot, when the bore is cold. With many rifles, as the barrel heats up, subsequent shots will land in different places .
