My newfie somehow has managed to learn that there is food inside the refrigerator and he himself opens the door with his paws and then messes up things inside. He would throw lots of food on the floor.

He would sometimes grab the turkey slices from refrigerator and then tear the pack on his own and consume it. He even consumed raw eggs.

He is very well fed and is kind of overweight too.

My question is how did he get to know that food exists inside the refrigerator and that the door can be opened with his paws or mouth?

How to stop this behavior?

His photo is in my profile. I hear from many answerers that i have to put lock on my fridge. if i do that, would that make my newfie upset and hurt? I don't want to make him feel that he isn't loved because i put lock on it.

Besides the mess.I think it's pretty cool. Can you teach it to get you a beer ?
you might try putting a lock on it for a while. It will get discouraged eventually

Yeah. Back about 1969, while we were out shopping our b_itch leaped 7ft to come in through an open window above her pen, opened the fridge, ate her meat intended for the next 3 days, ate a dozen eggs (no trace of yolks or shells), then at tea-time told us she was ready for her dinner, thank you please!
After that the window was shut while we were out....
And we painted the fridge handle with "Anti-Mate", a dog repellent that smells mostly like eucalyptus.

I'm sure your pooch had seen meat go into & out of the fridge on many occasions. Even if he hadn't, he could have smelled it and fluked opening the door while scratching in an attempt to "dig out" the meat - magnetic catches are EASY to open.

Anyway -
Instant step is to place something in front of the fridge so that he cannot reach the side of the door that opens.

Permanent step is to go to a hardware store and get an old fashioned "hook latch" plus at least 4 self-tapping screws.
Use a drill with a tiny bit to make starting holes in the top of the fridge door, at the right spacing to mount the hook part. Then use some self-tapping screws to mount that hook.
Work out where the circle-eye needs to be to keep the hook firmly engaged, drill tiny starting holes in the lid of the fridge, use self-tapping screws to mount the circle eye.

Keeping the dog out will then require sliding the hook into the eye before going away.
After which, opening the fridge will require the hook slid out of the eye before pulling the door open.
When everyone is home and keeping an eye on the dog the hook can be left out of the eye and the fridge used normally.

possibly put duct tape with something bad tasting on it . Something that will not hurt him. Ask a trainer or a Vet about this. If he is using a towel take it off. I have a cat that has an eating disorder, she eats when I walk past her food dish, like I am going to take it away from her. Is your dog "free feed" like her dish is out all the time? Maybe she has an eating disorder like diabetes or something along those lines. She might be being left alone to much, and feels abandoned. Or jealous of another pet?

some people put cleaning towels on the handle and they open it that way. use a strong permanent magnet one on the door and one on the side and wire together so you don't have to make holes in the fridge. i had the same problem with two of my dogs at different times.

You will have to put locks on the fridge. Get child proof ones, they will stop him getting your fridge open. Your dog is learning from habit, perhaps he watches you prepare his food from the fridge, or it was left open by accident one day? Either way he has relised thats where his dinner comes from.

ah,, i see the beautiful photo of your LANDSEER NEWFIE,, i am afraid that you will have to now put a locking type device on the door,,, once they learn they can do something and be rewarded for it,, they will always continue... try a bungee cord or something

Just put a god jam lock on it. Did he see you open it at all? That could have made him seem " huh, kool"
