On the contrary. . I have a CCW permit in my state. The few times I have been stopped, I tell the officer right away, that
1. I have a ccw permit,
2. The firearm is in the glovebox
3. My drivers license is in my purse which is (where ever it is)
4. My insurance papers are in the center console,
5. How would you like to proceed?
you see, Most all police officers know that for a person to get a permit in this state, you have to under go an FBI background check. If you were a felon, or had a record, you would not have the permit. . .
Also, keep your hands on top of the steering wheel, and if its night turn on your interior lights (after stopping your car, and turning off the engine and rolling down your window.)
I have been stopped 3 times in the last 5 years, and NEVER got a ticket.
On the whole, it is a big plus if you have that permit!
Hope this helps!

I got my license to carry when I was 23 years old. Let me tell you,
It is only worth it if you are responsible, or you don't have any little ones around that would get a hold of it. At the time when I got my license, it was because I had been robbed at gun point and car jacked on separate different occasions.
Later on, when I was about 26, my husband and I decided to have our first born, so I let my license expire. I don't think it is worth having now; as a parent.
Remember, if you get pulled over and you do have a license to carry, that better be the first thing out of your mouth. Let them know that you have a license to carry a gun and that the gun is in the car. -You'd better not have any open containers in your car either. They will not be lenient on you and it is a stiffer penalty if you get caught with an open alcohol container in the car while you have your license/gun in the car. They don't care if you were drinking or not. Can you imagine if you had any buddies with you that wanted to open a beer in your car or carry any drugs? It is all on your shoulders and you will take the heat if you get caught. That is where you have to be EXTREMELY RESPONSIBLE. When you get your license, the Gun and firearm trainers will explain everything to you about the do's and don'ts.
They will tell you where you cannot carry the gun.
If I remember correctly, it was schools, banks, hospitals, and post office/government places. I may have left another place out, but you will find out if you decide to get one.
-Good luck with your decision.
As for Clara Nett, she has a point but the police still have to take precaution because they do not know what state the person they pulled over is in. The handgun training instructor doesn't check if the person is mentally ill. There is no way of knowing that. They may check your history and find out if you are some mental patient and deny you, but if you are like a person I know who has had their gun license forever and recently been diagnosed with Biploar Disorder,
then there are problems. I'm just saying that there are loop holes.

If you can pass the background check you can purchase a gun. You can get a concealed license and the police will not perceive you as a threat. For one thing they won't know until they run your license and another is they will ask you. A permit is not carrying the gun on your person but in your car. The police will ask where you keep the weapon, and want to see it but you will not be a threat. The people who are a threat will not have a concealed license.

I will tell you from the stand point of a deputy sheriff of over 20 years. I have pulled over many driver's who quickly inform me of the CCW license and firearm inside the car. It is required of you to inform me and that tells me a lot about you as well. I believe everyone who has one and maintains it, is an extension of law enforcement within their communities. They will report incidents to law enforcement that others may think "I don't want to get involved". Finally let me say if you choose to obtain one, there is GREAT responsibility that goes with it. So be ABSOLUTELY sure you are up for it before you go through the process!
Stay safe!
After reading what Robert G. had to say it tells me that he DOESN'T know what he's talking about. I will not say I'm sorry for giving someone correct information. I also noticed that you did not provide a source, so I'm guessing that your only providing your opinion! ......Sandsailor

It depends on your location. I live in Oklahoma, you can buy a gun here without one.
I have been pulled over several times while carrying, sometimes the cops were jerks about it sometimes not. I have the feeling the cops who were jerks were unprofessional and the concealed weapon was just the outlet they needed to show me.

OH yes, and for a variety of reasons.
When pulled over, for anything at all, when driving your own car, in your own state, long before they pull you over, your license plate number raises a flag with the dispatcher, who warns the officer that you have such a license, and you wind up being treated with OH SO MUCH MORE respect than when pulled over in a different state, or in a car registered to someone else. It is very much like night and day, the difference with which so-called indifferent, proffessional, law-enforcement officers treat you.
I have never lived in a state that requires a concealed weapons permit to own a gun, but I can't say that I'm as well informed about every state.
Like the previous contributor stated, he believes that concealed weapons permit holders are an extension of the law, not a threat. But he's wrong in one of his statements: you are NOT required to identify yourself as a concealed weapons permit holder just because you happen to have a permit and he happens to be nearby. The laws on this differ slightly from state to state, but it is not until you have ascertained the identity of a police officer that you need inform him of the weapon in your possession. He pulls you over, you get his ID, and you use your cell phone to call his ID in. Once so verified, is when you tell him of your concealed weapon.. if you're carrying one. You do NOT announce the presence of a weapon to a police-impersonating thug, or you have as good as handed it over to him, when he decides to put his carjacking into motion. Just like Clara Nett wants to do.
(time to say you're sorry, Sandsail)
I have to call Himyname on his doublespeak, as well: hunters are allowed to carry guns in Australiar just like hunters are allowed to carry guns anywhere.
To debunk Elana's myth, you are not more likely to be shot with your own gun unless you tell your perpetrators where to find it. If you keep it a secret from anybody who does not absolutely need to know, then they won't even know you have it until you can pop them off with it, which most people don't really want to do, until they really feel the need to do it.
It's the stupid braggarts in this society who say stupid things like "I've got a gun and I'm not afraid to use it" who are really too afraid to use it, or they wouldn't be saying it, they would be shooting it. Another kind of stupidity is telling your children you have a gun, because they'll not only tell their friends, but they'll they'll tell every scary man who comes to the front door. So, don't go worrying about Elanas myth, unless you just want to get your gun so you can mouth off about it. Then, it poses quite a danger to yourself.

don't listen to those fools. get a concealed weapon license to cover your butt. if you do get pulled over, inform the officer that you have a concealed weapon in the car and you have a license that warrants you to carry it. as long as your record is clean, you are fine!

In Australia we have strict gun laws. The only people who are allowed to have hand guns are Police Officers. No members of the public are allowed to carry weapons of any sort. Automatic weapons are completely illegal.
Theres so many murder shootings in the USA. Its ridiculous. In Australia there is a murder shooting about once every ten years.

I would get the concealed permit. In fact, it has never caused me any problems. If you get caught and show that you have a permit, law enforcement will probably take you more seriously since you went through the proper avenues and are not breaking the law.

If:
you take your safety seriously...yes.
you are responsible and cautious...yes.
you understand the consequences...yes.
Many states require that you tell an officer that there's a weapon in the car.
