Here's my perspective from personal experience:
I had been in a really bad depression cycle for a very long time. As a last resort, I had ECT. I had a very significant short-term memory loss as well as some permanent memory loss. the process itself wasn't bad at all. (In fact, I was so depressed that the anesthesia was a welcome relief from the ongoing pain of depression) I had 6 treatments.
Was it worth it?
I didn't like the ECT at all, but I'm sure I wouldn't still be alive if I hadn't gone through it.

Electroconvulsive Therapy can cause some temporary memory loss, and in less frequent cases, some permanent memory loss.
It most frequently causes some short-term confusion and memory loss that is restored within days to a few weeks.
All procedures with anesthesia (as this one requires), are potentially dangerous. The risks and benefits should be discussed with the psychiatrist suggesting this method of treatment. All of your questions should be answered before the consent form is signed!

Not dangerous if done properly, many patients are helped by this technique. The so called loss of memory is only temporary,is reversible and even that is applicable to short term memory only.
