With respect to the other contributors, Red Hat's home editions, which are free (and meaning Fedora these days but even the older ones) are testing versions of its Red Hat Enterprise Linux. If your hardware can run it, fine, but there is no warranty on it. and it is not guaranteed to work out of the box. Some people see that as a disadvantage, others don't.

There is a large, friendly, informal network to help you if you run into trouble, however it is a good idea to know what you are doing. For example it took me years to get my sound card running under Red Hat 9 (I had originally installed Red Hat 7.0 but it took me three upgrades to get it working.

I don't want to sound discouraging but it is precisely a good way to learn how your computer works and as such an experience not comparable to Windoze at all. There are distros that try to give you an experience comparable to Windoze, and Ubuntu gives you an experience which is less demanding (in some ways) than any other distros (I like Red Hat/Fedora. I don't like Ubuntu but I do recommend both).

If you want to use Red Hat, be aware there is a learning curve. If you are willing to invest in it you will find you can learn to do everything you can do on a Windoze machine except call up the Blue Screen of Death.

If you think you are going to operate any flavor of Linux, and have it behave like WINDOZE, don't waste your time.

Additional note: Windoze is broke, thats why its is constantly fixed, from the very first box set that is shipped, until they make the next broken version. If you don't believe me, have you ever considered why "windows update" runs the very first time you load windows, and never ends until they drop support.
