my cat is about 4 years old. He was happy all day today, jumping around, just as usual. At night we washed him
and he was licking himself. We dont know exactly when after that but he was laying on the ground and i noticed
that he was laying with his eyes open and he never sleeps like that, i tried to pet him but no rsponse. My husband
did CPR (he is a nurse) and tried himlich manuvere and so on, nothing. The cat had really bad smelling feces, and then there
was blood out of his mouth and he pooped more while he was doing cpr on him.

Does anyone know waht could be wrong? We have another cat and well i am pregnant too so that is another problem
for taxoplosmosis.

In terms of cat food it was whiskies before and about a week ago we changed to innova both wet and dry and sometimes
we give him friskies wet too. We also have a drinking fountain thingy.

I just want to know what it could be incase it is contageous for our other kitty.

we live in a studio, no rat poisoning, and husband checked mouth for foreign bodies. We washed him with just water, we wet them sometimes at night when they run around to get them busy with cleaning and then they fall asleep

Once again, it was just water, we just wetted him. Plain water, he was just grooming himself. No shampoo or soap or flea meds or anything.

2007-11-29 20:15:03 · update #2

Ok, we wet them because we live in an apartment building they like to run around at night and the guy below complains. If we wet them they get busy with self grooming and stop running around. It is not odd to do this we have no choice unless we want to just get kicked out of here. This was the only thing that worked and tired them out and made them fall asleep after they groomed themselves .

Please stop accusing me, you are rude. If i used something i would have no problem saying that i did as for one it would have been cat safe and secondly i would have read the instructions.

At this point I think you would need an autopsy done to find the cause of death. You've covered all the obvious things and came up negative, a vet would need to actually look inside.

(Toxo does not kill cats, by the way)

I am so sorry for your loss! I'm sure it was very traumatic. Since you have no idea what happened with your pet, I would definately (if you can afford it) have your vet do an autopsy. This will give you the peace of mind that not only is your other cat going to be okay but you are too. If it turns out it was some sort of poison, you will at least know that there is something in your home and you need to look for it.
Again, I'm so sorry, I too recently lost my cat and know it is so hard! Good Luck!

HI there...I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your cat. It's difficult to determine a cause as there are many possibilities such as feline diseases/disorders, stroke from a heart murmur that wasn't detected known as Hypercardiomyopathy (HCM), hidden toxins, etc...

Since you do have another cat it may be beneficial to ring a veterinarian and discuss if a necropsy would be helpful to determine the cause of death albeit it is not inexpensive. Perhaps you could ask if you would need to have your other cat tested for some of the feline disorders that could cause something similar.

My blessings go out to you and your family.

What were you washing the cat for and what did you use on him? Was it some sort of flea treatment? It sounds like he was poisoned with whatever you put on him as you said he was licking himself.

Edit - something's very odd here. Why would you just wet down your cat with water? If you put something on your cat just tell us. No one's going to call the police on you but it may prevent the death of another cat if something on the market is this toxic.

when my cat died from lukemia he had blood from his mouth and also used the bathroom. that is just something that happens with death. I don't think you cat had lukemia tho because he wouldn't of been acting so happy earlier in the day. I would advise you to stick to a planned diet with your animals. I would take the other cat for a check up and explain to the vet what happend with the first cat.

It almost sounds like he got some sort of toxic poisoning (what did you "wash" him with?) OR internal bleeding (from rat poisoning or struck by a force or fall) for it all to happen so suddening in 1 day.
Could any be a possibility?

So sorry for your loss, .. doubt it is anything contagious.
But consult a vet, in case.

I'm so sorry and i believe you did just use water!

Maybe he had some kind of illness that was not detected of maybe he got ill from something he ate?? It is hard to say but if you take him to a vet they should be able to tell you the cause!

I'm so sorry for your loss!

Good luck!

The guy below may have poisoned it! Cat haters think nothing about poisoning cats with antifreeze. I know this from experience.
