An old classmate that I have been talking to on line said that's what her husband does at a school. Never heard of it but figured someone here might know. Thanks

A stationary engineer operates and maintains a shore side steam boiler and power generating equipment. The equipment is fixed in place in a building and is stationary in its location. In contrast a Marine Engineer operates the same equipment but is on a ship which moves around on the water.

Stationary engineers operate the heating and power infrastructure of large or multiple buildings such as those found on a campus.

Many states require a certification to become one. Certifications range in level from fireman to chief engineer and document skill and experience in grade. Massachusetts requires not only a written test but an oral examination infront of a board.

Stationary engineers are those that work for the federal government. They are required to do so little that any movement is a reason to look up and see what just happened! They are required to only write four lines of code per day, fill out endless useless forms, and never do anything more than the tiniest part of any project. They move so little, the term "Stationary Engineer" was coined by Mrs. Ima Huge Fatwaist in 1997.

Since then, the Stationary Engineer has been given protected status by Congress and is now an official branch of the government under the Dept. of Homeland Security.
