yes if a female has not been fixed she goes in to heat and bleeds if you do not want to get her fixed you can put a pair of mens underwear on her and stick her tail through the fly =D my pup just got out of heat =D good luck! and male dogs can smell her from miles away so if you dont want puppys make sure you dont leave her outside without you there even if she is in a fenced area... they can mate through chainlink or jump over or dig under... they will do anything to get to her so make sure you keep her away from males and when she stops bleeding that does NOT mean she is out of heat i would reccomend keeping her away from males for a month after she stops bleeding she can still get preg. when shes done bleeding but still in heat. i hope this helps!!

They go into season (or on heat) normally Evey 6 to 9 months.
At this time the vulva will become enlarged and an amount of blood stained fluid is passed, some may have some discomfort and go off their food a few days before the season starts. They become attractive to dogs normally from the first day of the season, but they are not normally interested until the 7-10th day.You need to avoid other male dogs at this time, but as long as she is not left on her own with them then you will not have a problem.
It will last for around 3 weeks.

yes they do. They do not however have one every month, But while in this cycle she is emitting pheromones and if you don't watch her closely you will end up with a pregnant dog, If you are not going to use her for breading I recommend you get her fixed

They go into heat twice a year, so two periods a year. I'm a little jealous.

Yes, they do. Dogs period however happened only once a year. As mentioned by other as go into heat but we called it here as 'the right temperature' to get pregnancy.
Just like human, you need to get the right temperature to conceive a baby.
