The entire right side of my mouth hurts..I've had several opinons..but haven't seen the dentist yet b/c I've been busy with finals..I'm a grad student so as soon as I find time..I HAVE to go to the doctor...Any idea on what it could be?..Some mornings are worse than others..and it seems to move from tooth to tooth...with the pain disappearing in one and moving to another..my gums are not red or inflamed...but they hurt and are extremely sensitive...is it my wisdom teeth?? I'm 24..I thought if I had problems I'd have had them by now?...

What you could be looking at is a few extractions. Bridges are a better option than root canals. Quite possibly, your wisdom tooth (top or bottom, whichever it is) has decayed, and you have another tooth with decay simultaneously.

Notice how I said extractions (yanking the tooth). Personally, I do not advocate root canals. Many parts of the procedure seem iffy to me, especially the fact that once the root canal is
done, the tooth is now dead and harboring bacteria. However, I am not a dentist or a doctor. And you may feel unsure believing someone you have never met (me).

Most importantly, look in your mouth. I assume the pain is in your rear right molars. Hold a mirror to your teeth, and look inside. Do you see any visible decay (black spots/pits) on teeth? Sometimes you can't entirely see the decay, and yet, it is there and has progressed without you knowing it. In this case, an x-ray at a dentist's office is what you need to get ASAP.

If so, the decay has progressed to the dentine, or the pulp.

Your best bet is to see a dentist. Dentists go to school to know how to treat issues just like yours. They want to help you. And they will know how to treat severe sensitivity/pain, even if only temporarily. At the least, get an x-ray just to see.

At the same time, beware of dentists. All dentists went to school, but not all of them were educated on how to cure their patients. They only treat the decay, they do not prevent it. Get multiple appraisals for any work, and try to use a holistic dentist if possible.

School is important, but your health is of the utmost importance. I don't want to scare you, or hurt you feelings, however severe decay is an ominous sign.

How has your diet been lately? Try to eat nutrient dense foods. Decay is a sign of too many processed foods, and not enough whole, unprocessed foods.
Another recommendation would be to avoid all foods/drinks that cause nerve 'shots' and pain like ice cream, sweets, soda, extremely hard foods.

Please update me on your progress. Teeth should not be neglected.

Find a dentist, call tommorow and say tou have a terrible toothache and need to be seen right away...a narcotic might be the only thing that will help you sleep with a toothache that bad, but if you don't have any prescription strength stuff get some Advil PM and some anbesol gel to put on it...if that doesn't help and you are still miserable and can't sleep you could always go to the ER too...
I have been there, a bad toothache hurts much worse than any pain I have ever felt ( and I have 3 kids). You have my sympathy, good luck.

1. Obviously, get to a doctor soon. But you know that part already.

2. If you have ANY window of time tomorrow, or even overnight, go to the nearest grocery store or anyplace with a decent OTC pharmacy section and buy some of that numbing/anesthetic stuff like Ambesol to apply to your hurty teeth and gums.

3. Heat some water to fairly hot, just short of scalding so you can stand it. Make about a coffee cup's worth. Add to it several shakes of salt and a teaspoon of baking soda. Swish around in your mouth to clean the area. This will also have a mild anesthetic effect.

4. If oral pain relievers aren't helping, you can crush an aspirin and mix with a tiny bit of warm water and apply as a paste right on the affected area. This will taste like crap, but it will provide some additional pain relief. (I like the whiskey drops idea, too, as sort of the same concept.)

5. See #1!

Feel better soon.

If u have any kind of pain killer medication like asprin or Ib profin that works really well. Also if you have any orajel that will temporarily numb the pain. You can apply in on the gums and it is a numbing substitute. You should really visit the dentist though because my friend had a problem with her tooth one time and it ended up being abscess. The worse it get the more the infection will grow. Good luck!

You could need a root canal...I had similar pain and couldn't sleep. They recommend rinsing with a cool to lukewarm salt water mix, but be careful. If that's what it is, the wrong temp will really set it off.

I had to go to my dentist on an emergency basis on a Saturday and he killed the nerve which took away the pain, but I still had to get the root canal done the following week.

p.s. - root canals aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be.
