Gasoline - shortened is "gas." Sheesh.

Actually, "Gasoline" was somewhat of a brand name, but was never trademarked, and therefore became a generic term.

Gas is an abbreviation for gasoline. Gasoline actually refers to any liquid fuel, not just petroleum based fuels. I guess the abbreviation "gas" is used instead of "gasoline" for the same reason that we call it "petrol" and not the full name of liquid petroleum spirit.
Also within the engine itself the fuel is in a vapourised form whencombustion occurs, it is only in a liquid form when it is sold - not when it is used.

It's short for 'gasoline,' and, yes, it is also a gas. That's why it is not wise to light a match when you are in the vicinity of an open container of gasoline... its fumes (gaseous part) could ignite.

Also, it's more fun in the conversation when the gas station guy says, "Do you need gas," and I can say, "No. I have gas. I need an Alka Seltzer."

yeah, but it's the fumes (I.E.) the GAS, that actually allows the stuff to combust and make our engines work. So therefore... our cars run on gas, and we tend to call it how we see it over here. :)
