I think Sydney summed it up for me "Imperfection can be beautiful.". I have a caesarean scar that is beautiful to me because without it my baby son may not have been born alive.

Scars at least belong on the neutral to attractive end of the scale. Scars are not something that you can help having, so it isnt really fair to count them as ugly. Its not like you woke up one day and said "hmmm, I think I shall go looking to get a nasty scar".
I don't find accidental scars particularly appealing, but they're certainly nothing to worry about or hide in the house over. They arent a bad bikini, flabby thighs, or a terrible haircut. They're a permanent part of your body over which you have no control.
There is a form of body modification in which people actually do go looking for scars. These can be formed through several different methods and are cared for to increase the skin's scarring reaction. These can form absolutely beautiful pieces of body art.
If your friend doesnt have a scar that covers a huge square footage, he might consider finding an artist who can transform his scar into a design. Some scars can also be tattooed over, so if he wanted to hide it that way, it may be an option for a well-established scar.
Scars are a part of life, but they don't have to mark more than your skin. No one is going to refuse to love your friend because of a mark he can't help having. People may not give the scar first prize in a beauty contest, but it's really not a big issue.

facial scars may be seen by some as unattractive because of films like AL Capone, but scars from say being flogged like in pirate films or battle scars like in gladiator, can be attractive in a manly way because of the semi romantic way they were received. but people with real life scars may have a different bent on this whole concept.

I would only find them attractive on a person I loved. Otherwise I would not be attracted to scars.

Men can get away with them more often than women can. It depends on where it is and what it's from. Surgery scars are pretty ugly. Scars caused buy accidents can almost be sexy on a man as long as it's not deforming.

It depends... I've seen scars that I did think added character and were therefore attractive in their own way.

They can be quite attractive at times.
Also if it is a facial scar they do add character.

Depends on how many and what they look like. I have scars all over me (legs and arms). They're not pretty at all.

I only have one scar that I don't like, one of the few that wasn't self-inflicted. Mole removal gone horribly wrong....
