RE:
How do I get rid of a possum in my back yard without harming my cat?
I have a semi-feral cat that lives in my yard, and I feed it everyday. I make sure not to leave food out for fear of rodents and whatnot. However, I still see the possum around on my back porch, and I want to get rid of it. I'm just worried about harming or driving away the cat as well. ...

People are saying he could kill the cat..I guess all possums are diff though b/c there has been a possum living in and around my parents backyard for a few years and they have 5 mostly outdoor cats and they are totally fine....
Live trap will work best with some bait. And if you have been feeding this cat you should trap him too and fix him. Maybe you don't wanna hear it but it is your responsibility now. I told my parents the same thing about a feral cat living in their yard. They live trapped him and fixed him and set him free back in their yard and he has not left yet so it must not have traumatized him too much. Cats are territorial so he will mostly likely stay, especially where there is a constant food source. Good luck!

I have a possum in my back yard. A full grown cat is not in that much danger. They will run from the possum. I have cats and a possum that eat out of the same dish at the same time. Weird, but they seem to get along. Kittens are a different story. Possums are not really aggressive unless challenged by a VERY aggressive cat or dog. If your cat is feral (as mine also is) I would not worry about him unless he is aggressive toward the possum

Our possums here are fine with the local cats, it's the raccoons that are dangerous. Possums don't go after full grown cats and I've seen them eating side by side with the local strays. Besides, they're omnivores, they eat fruit and veggies as much as meat/catfood.
A live trap would catch a possum quickly, just drive them 4 miles away and release in a park that has a water source. Or out in the country somewhere, give the possum a chance at a normal life.

Get a live trap, you can either buy one, or some times you can borrow one from local animal control. Set it out, put some tuna in it, or something equally smelly. Now, you will catch the cat, but not more than once! After the cat decides he doesn't like it, wait for Mr. Opossum to come for dinner! Then it's just a matter of either disposing of the possum or returning the live trap with it's new resident to animal control!

that possum could kill the cat...they got a whole mouth that is chock full of very sharp teeth. you can't set a live trap for it cause you might catch the cat...but that may not be a bad thing, you could have the cat vetted (catch my drift, here) and either adopt if that is possible (the cat has to be atleast somewhat agreeable here) or re-release it, and while the cat is at the vet's you could catch the possum and take it for a ride in the country and let it go far far far away from your home.
or call critter getter's to do the job, you may not want to deal with a possum in a live trap, like i said they got a mouth full of very sharp teeth, and they have claws that are very sharp too, don't be fooled by their seemingly docile appearance.

Although the possum will eat cat food, it is harmless and not a threat top the cat. Live and let live, no reason to get rid of it

Possums and cats get along great together.
I would not worry about the possum. Possums are great to have around. They eat rats, bugs, snakes and what have you :) They also do not get rabies.
Leave it be.
