i'm debating whether or not to buy a dog bed that says it protects against odors AND FLEAS. it's nylon, fleece, cedar, and orthopedic foam. i know cedar helps with odors, but does it help protect against fleas? please only answer if you have some genuine knowledge on the subject. thanks!

No, no reason it would. This is not the way to protect against fleas. Fleas are tough little buggers - they're like cockroaches, only worse. They can't be killed or kept away by things that would work against other insects. This is why proper, specialised treatments have had to be developed to ensure pets stay flea free.

If you're going to get a dog you need to learn about proper flea, worming and vaccination regimes. If you need to prevent fleas (and you will) then get proper flea treatment from a vet, and proper deworming is also a must, especially when the dog is a pup.

Never buy any flea or worm products from a store - stores aren't licensed to sell the right drugs for flea prevention, or any medication for that matter.

Cedar is supposed to repel fleas. I don't use those types of beds for a couple reasons. One is you can't wash the bed & second if your dog has any type of allergies (like hayfever kind of allergies) the cedar tends to make it worse. I make large dog beds out of mattress pads (the eggcrate type you can find at places like Walmart) & fleece fabric. Just cut the pad to the size you want & get fleece fabric 4-6 " larger than what you need. Cut strips around the edges & tie each set of strips (1 from bottom & 1 from top). It works great, is washable, & alot less expensive.

Yes, cedar definitely helps repel fleas...from the immediate area. If your dog never leaves the bed, no fleas will get on him.

That is, if your dog chooses to lay on the cedar bed. Cedar stinks to dogs, unfortunately, just like it stinks to fleas. If you have an outside dog and put a cedar bed in his house, he will likely lay on it in order to keep out of the elements.

What we have found effective is to lay cedar chips around the yard and especially around the house. This keeps fleas out of the entire yard and away from the whole house.
