I was looking in my freezer and saw lots of ice cream my family had accumulated, and wondered if ice cream was still edible if there was simple ice/frost on top of it. Let me know! Solve my curiosity!

I work at Wells' Dairy Blue Bunny ice cream plant in St. George, UT. The frost on the ice cream is harmless, but will not taste fresh. Whenever we make ice cream, we print an expiration date one year in advance of the time the product was pumped into each package. Freezer burn can ruin a small portion of the package, or the whole thing. I'd just toss it and buy some new ice cream if it doesn't taste fresh. If it tastes ok, and it's less than a year old, might as well keep it.

Yeah its just ice. The water actually separates from the rest of the stuff in the ice cream. Since it is frozen it takes a long time for this to happen. Theoretically ice cream stays good forever. Whether you like the taste of it after it has sat in the freezer for a few years is another story.

It's edible, but scrape off the frost. That part tastes bad. The ice cream under it might, too. Frost isn't a good sign. You should be eating your ice cream faster, anyway.

Its fine to eat but it might not taste too good. It sounds like it's been in the freezer too long. just make sure it's not past its due date. If you don't like the taste you could always scrap off the frosted bits and use the rest to make smoothies or milk shakes. Add banana, strawberries, honey and a little milk or yogurt and turn it into a great smoothie.

It's still probably good, but the frosty layer won't be too tasty. Scrape that off, then enjoy the goodness underneath. You can sometimes prevent that frosty layer by putting a piece of plastic wrap/cling film down on the ice cream (touching the surface) before you close the lid.

its fine to eat that, however that frost on top is not a good sign....well i never take it as one, either your feezer temperature needs to be adjusted or your ice cream is not holding up well......

It won't hurt you, but ewe, I like my ice cream fresh. I'd put it down the disposal.

it's just freezer burn, i actually argued you this with the ex wife and we asked the doctor. It may taste not-so-fresh but is perfectly ok yo eat.

not too much frost, but if it's just a thin small layer then it's ok. Eat it quick though!
