Get him a large LCD screen TV. Or get him a smaller LCD screen TV and a PlayStation 3 and a gift certificate to Gamestop, E.B. games, Best buy or Circuit City. That's what I would want.

Have to readjust my thinking, we usually operate on a budget of about $40 per recipient!
It obviously depends what he's into. If he likes reading, you may want to try getting hold of an Amazon Kindle for $400. (See first link.) Note they are currently out of stock so I don't know when you'd be able to get one. Also, if (like me) you're not in the USA, ignore this suggestion.
Otherwise... it really depends on what he already has and what he wants! Does he have a good home theater setup? That's an area where you can spend significant chunks of money... also a games console with a bunch of games, if he doesn't already have one (but it sounds like he probably would).
Otherwise, have a look at somewhere like thinkgeek (second link below). You could probably spend the entire amount there on various weird and wonderful gadgets!
Particularly awesome: the Bioloid Humanoid Robotics Kit (see third link)

If he has been a very good boy, why not give him you?
The games and such are just going to take his eyes off you anyway.
So why not go do something with him where he doesn't have to talk. You know, an action packed weekend away where you are doing guy stuff and not asking him to tell you how he feels or where the relationship is going.
Be his friend....that is why he has you around.
Be his lover.....that is why he has you around.
Encourage him. Tell him how great you think he is.
Do, don't just talk. And you will have his undivided attention.

Well, depending on what type of job he does, it might be cool to get gadgets that would be very useful at work. If he spends most of his time at work, then it'd be good to have something to make work a little bit easier. For example, if he works in construction, some power tools.

The weirdest gadget I've seen lately is the irobot looj. I want that. You have to own a house, though. A real house.
Has he got a big HDTV? Can you get HD channels? That would be nice.

Forget gadgets
Buy him a 1-day or 2-day lesson in a racing-car school or
a fighter-pilot flight, where you go on a fighter pilot and you do "air-combat".
