I use both and I think DivX is better because it is fster to burn and if you format it right the quality will match DVD quality if probably better.

I never sayed DVD was a video format!!
This question is for those who have used both not just seen both.

A standard DVD uses MPEG-2 at about 6 Mbits/s
Divx uses MPEG-4, part 2, which at lower bit rates is far more efficient than MPEG-2
So, at 6 Mbits/s, both are the same
At 4 Mbits/s or lower, Divx probably can give you better quality
However, a better comparison would be Divx vs WMV or Divx vs AVC (H.264).
