I have to get 4 teeth removed in a few days - 2 wisdom/2 molars. The dentist gave me Amoxicillan for an infection (3 per day). So far I have taken ten of those, I'm not sure how the infection is coming along, but what I DO know is that I still have IMMENSE pain at times, lasting anywhere from ten minutes to a half hour. Throbbing, at times I almost feel like screaming out loud, and I am a person that can take a good amount of pain. I called the dentist back today and told him about the pain, in which he said that the pain should subside with the clearing up of the infection, and he also prescribed Tylenol 4 with Codeine for me. But still at times the pain is so severe, I cannot lay down to sleep, I must sleep in a chair. The wisdom teeth and molars to be removed are cracked, and have holes in them too - some of the holes feel very deep. I wonder if I could have Dry Socket even though I have not had the teeth removed? I cannot imagine Dry Socket being any more painful than this.

Well, the dentist looked at the teeth, and took several X-rays too, but he didn't say they were abcessed, he only said that I had an "infection". I assume he would have told me if they were abcessed, or is that kinda the SAME as having an infection?

A dry socket is where the blood clot in the extraction site comes out. So, no, you can't have a dry socket right now. You probably have one or more abcessed teeth. An abcess is an infection and your dentist is right that the pain will lessen when the infection is cleared up. Make sure your taking the antibiotic when you're supposed to; don't miss a single one! Many patients say that their pain worsens when they are laying down especially at night and that they have trouble sleeping because of it. I'm not sure what you can do for the pain other than what you are doing now. Take the antibiotic and the pain medication and sleep upright if the pain is too severe. Hope this helps. Sorry for your pain!
