Yoiu are right about it missing just about this time. One story says the Jews took it away to a safe place.
According to one professor, he claims to have traced it to a small cottage in Ethopia where it is central to a religion there. Only the high priest can enter the building and gaze on it and he describes it as the most beautiful thing he has ever seen. But no one is allowed into the building so nobody knows for sure.

History assumes it was taken by the Babylonians and destroyed by Nebuchadrezzar. There all sorts of other stories, Ethiopians, It was secretly buried under Temple Mount, Josiah destroyed it, but the most plausible seems that Nebuchadrezzer ran off with it.

No one knows. In St Mary's Church in Axum, Ethiopia, they say it is hidden and only one priest- who spends his whole life in the church and never leaves- sees it. But there are many theories and nobody knows for sure.
