You can't compare apples to oranges. Muay thai is a ring fighting art. It's among the top arts to use in stand up fighting in the ring. As far as other arts owning it-that's just silly. You can't put a master of any art in a muay thai fight and expect them to stay awake. Just like you can't expect a thai fighter to out wrestle a jiu jitsu guy or out box a boxer with his hands only or get more points than a tkd guy in a points match. My point is a good defense against muay thai is to learn muay thai. Nothing trains to properly block a thai kick, knees, elbows and why should they because they are not thai fighting. mma is the exception and it is no longer seperate arts. It's a compilation of stuff that works from several arts.

advantages are good powerful distance strikes like kicks and punches. and it has very good clinch work with they use elbows and knees to pretty much the fullest extent. disadvantages are the traditional stance is very upright leaving the chin wide open. when western boxing first met up with muay thai the win loss ratio was pretty even, because boxers could find the chin very well and give a good knock out. some traditional muay thai fighters still have this problem. muay thai has NO ground game at all so if the fight goes to the ground to a submission fighter or wrestler the muay thai fighter is in big trouble. HOWEVER I don't think a common thug could take down any martial artist especially a Thai fighter. and by the way there is absolutely no martial art better than the other, it is all about how the artist trains and uses what he knows

Advantages: Use two strikes almost unique to Muay Thai knees and elbows. And unlike many other martial arts Thai Boxing uses the shin to kick instead of the instep of the foot resulting in stronger kicks. Regular sparring which promotes live training. Great conditioning. Uses long and close range fighting from kicks to knees in the clinch.

Disadvantage: Lacks takedowns and ground fighting.

any style beat any other style for instance a tkd person can beat thai boxer, but then there are muay thai people that can beat tkd. it solely depends on how you train.

but like i mentioned muay thai having a weakness on the ground(if the person does not cross train) so you can exploit that weakness if you are trained in (kosen)judo, brazilian jiujitsu, wrestling, sambo, etc...this doesnt mean these styles are "better" though

i'm only going to say what I think about it as a striking art since it has close to no grapling, original Muay Thai actually has grapling but generaly and unless your in Thai Land your going to train without it

Anyway, the good stuff first
* Great fitness and conditioning
* Full force sparing and fighting, teaching you how to take a punch and mentaly prepare you for the fight
* Balances good punching with good kicking
* Sticks and perfects the basics, not allot of fancy stuff just the stuff that works
* Does have a little stand up grapling (if you can call it that)

And the not so good:
* very sport orientated, needs a good trainer to also give you the street defence mentality
* uses gloves, not really a bad thing since its probably the smartest way to train full force, but doing it all the time doesn't teach important things like how to make a fist without the wraps

Advantages - excellent striking and stand up fighting.
Disadvantages - very small amount of ground skills.

Judo and jujitsu are very good against muay thai, or anything with ground grappling.

Advantages:
1. Teaches good striking techniques
2. Great conditioning
3. and Full contact training prepares one to get used to getting hit.

Disadvantages:
1. No ground techniques
2. Is considered a young man's sport. (Think about it, can you picture a 60 year old going toe to toe with a 20 year old?) The training alone is brutal to a guy in his 20s how much more for an old man.

Muay Thai has great striking techniques, kicking, punching, elbows, and knees, But lacks in take downs and really has no grappling.

Muay Thai has alot of hard knees and elbows but it doesnt teach ground fighting techniques, joint locks, ext. I prefer Styles of Kung Fu because they are realy complex and have all of these.

The advantage is that as a standup art is second to none, it's very effective. It lacks throws, but the clinch can make up for it.

The disadvante is the lack of ground grappling, any grappling art that has ground game would dominate it.

This style doesn't seem to have ground fighting techniques.Unless you are the BMF of fighting, that is were most fights are won or lost.In the mud, gravel, pavement you know what I mean.I have seen many a fight in my 47 yrs on this planet, and that seems to me to be the only disadvantage of that style.
