I have heard so many people start sentences with "evolution says there was a big bang".
This is absolutely false, yet this misinterpretation persists. Why?

I'm pretty sure novangelis hit the nail on the head: They are either ignorant, or willfully distorting the truth to continue to keep the ignorant as such.

Some are ignorant. Some are dishonest.
The dishonest ones intentionally muddle the two to make sure the ignorant group remains ignorant.

Since both occurred early in prehistory, it's easy for some to mix them up. Especially since the answers are similar.

I think the two are lumped together because they are a common topic of debate between the religious and the non-religious -- they share in their ability to challenge religious beliefs.
