The main difference between all Christian denominations come down to two primary items:

1) Church Authority
&
2) Rule of Faiith

The apostolic/ancient churches affirm episcopal/apostolic authority in the Church & affirm a tri-parite rule of fath consisting of Scripture, apostolic tradition & Church.

In contrast, Protestant denominations affirm an egalitarian view of church authority & typically affirm that the Bible is the sole rule of faith.

It's mostly regional. One of my favorite lines from a movie is from A River Runs Through It: "Methodists are Baptists who can read."

A Lutheran is a Catholic who likes their sin long and hard, a Presbyterian is a Methodist who can read, and a baptist is someone who needs to be reminded when to wash themself. That just about cover it?

Usually either the doctrine of the church, the heirarchy of the church, or the basis of authority for doctrine or organization

Rather than sects, these differences are usually referred to as "denominations", from de (out of) nominae (name)
