Teeth have roots, and for whatever reason, the roots die. This is when you need a root canal. The dentist removes the dead root out of the canal it is in. The pain can come when the root is not completely dead. Then when the dentist probes the canal and hits a live nerve, pain happens. The dead root needs to be removed to prevent infection.
