Chimpanzees by and large are not great at sign language, which would be the manual equivalent of speech. They can function about as well as 18-24 month old child, at best. Their syntax is usually off.
Naturally there are brighter examples of more articulate chimpanzees, but it appears that these are the exception, not the rule. They are, perhaps, the BabelFish of the Simian world.

Koko the Gorilla has scored between 70 and 95 on human IQ tests. She is able to communicate in sign language.

Chimps can communicate, although they have a hard time with grammar rules and symbols. I'm not sure how fluent they would be - probably at the level of a very young child.

I actually saw a documentary on TV where they had taught chimpanzees sign language. The chimps, themselves, were able to create new words by combining others (such as 'water bird' for 'swan').

Not very.
I saw on the Daily Show a year or so ago they were telling about the sign language using gorilla and when a person asked him what the meaning of life was, he signed "Banana"

Judging by the literacy levels displayed in this forum, most humans would be struggling to hold up their end of any interspecial conversation.

I still don't think they'd have the ability for human speech. Just my opinion.
