The trunk of the car is considered to be different from the passenger compartment. In most states, you can carry an opened container in the trunk since it is not accessible to anyone in the car.
There is also the issue of the police ever finding it in your trunk. Cops have to have probable cause to search your vehicle. That means there has to be a reasonable suspicion that you are in posession of something illegal before they open your trunk and search it. And that is why you should never agree to let them search your trunk. By refusing to consent, if they illegally search your vehicle and find anything illegal, it will likely not be admissable in court.

Yes If it is in the trunk it is not accessible to the driver and if you are 21 or older it is OK. If it is in the car with you, it is illegal.
