Just listen to them. Sometimes the biggest help for someone is to just lend them an ear.

Listen, don't judge, don't try to fix it for them. Offer physcial comfort if appropriate, such as hold their hand or hold them when they cry, but that isn't always appropiate and should be used with caution. If it is very serious such as abuse or suicidal thinking I would see help from a professional because that is beyond what you as untrained person can deal with. But just try to be there for them, a place where they can go and someone to listen.

I think someone who is struggling emotionally needs someone they can trust to talk to... You must be a good listener... and non judgmental.
