The term pretty much explains it. In powerpoint, you have one slide or image after another, right? Well, there has to be SOMETHING that comes between each one--that would be a transition. Now, if you wanted to make what comes between each image interesting you might want to manipulate the transition so there is a fade out or a black out or whatever. That would be a transition effect.

Animation is the actual frame is animated. A transition effect is an animated (or not) transition between two frames, to move smoothly from on to the other ( like fading) hOpe that helps
