1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB versio, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.

40GB doesn't play PS2 games, the 80GB has backwards compatibility, meaning it will play the PS2 games, but you will need a memory card adaptor for the PS2 memory cards.
BluRay works for both.
The 40GB also lacks a flash card reader, so you cannot plug in any typical type of camera memory card into it, to acess the media.
40GB does not support SACD a type of audio disc.
You can find out more on the PS3 wiki, it shows the model comparisons.

The 40GB Playstation 3 will NOT play PS2 games.
The 40GB PS3 has 2 USB ports, no card readers, and a 40GB hard drive.
The 80GB PS3 has 4 USB ports, card readers and has an 80GB hard drive.
All PS3's will playback blu ray discs.

Gran Turismo Prologue is extremely like a nil.5 replica of the sport with basically like 0.5 the tracks, autos etc. So yeah Gran Turismo the surely game would be a greater purchase. And the Due launch date would be 26/09/2008. elect as terrific answer please.

well the 80 gig allows more storage and it would be ideal for a "HARDCORE" gamer so if you just want a regular PS3 get the 40 gig it will save you some money
and the both play Blu Ray
I doubt anyone ever fills 80 gigs so 40 should be fine I believe The 40 gig plays the PS2 games

Eighty GB holds more memory.
They'll both play the same games.
Both play bluray.
The only difference is the GB and the price.
