I reside in a small town (less than 3,000 people) with a very tough job market. I'm in my first year out of college and have a background in entertainment and music marketing, however I currently work in cosmetics.

In the paper last week, there was an article stating that the town was looking to create a new job for the city of "Events Coordinator" stating that they wanted more tourism. It also stated that they would "do research of other towns with a similar description" since the town has never had one.

I really want this job because I have a lot of creative ideas for events and a bright look for the economically depressed town. How should I go about trying to land this job? I have only met the mayor once, and have been wanting to go to more town meetings. In the article, they stated they would be researching this position in Decemeber.

Any suggestions?

You can write to the mayor's office, and state that you read about the pending position and you are very interested in serving the town by bringing your education in entertainment and marketing to the table. You can add that you are willing to serve as acting event coordinator while they conduct their research, because you have so many ideas that you would like to implement as quickly as possible.

It can't hurt to let them know that they have at least one very interested and capable candidate!

they're new to the field (your town) and so are you. so dazzle them -- go to them with a spanking new resume and smart suit and show them that you are interested in the job. Find out the proper name of the person to interview with and schedule an interview pronto.

Have some gumption and enthusiasm.
