Navy Reservists serve as both Enlisted personnel and Officers depending on their qualifications and interests. Officers are normally college graduates, while Enlisted personnel are usually high school graduates. Before you begin proudly serving in our force, there are certain basic requirements you must meet and certain procedures you must complete, including Recruit Training.

REQUIREMENTS

Age and Education
To qualify, you must be between the ages of 18 and 39 and have a high school diploma, although, in some instances, GED certificates can be accepted.

Health and Height
To gain entrance, you must pass a physical exam. The height requirement for both men and women is between 60 and 80 inches.

Citizenship
To join, you must be a U.S. citizen or a legal immigrant currently living in the United States with a valid visa or Green Card. The Navy Reserve cannot assist in the immigration process. To enlist, you must legally immigrate first, and then apply once you are living in the U.S. The expiration date on your visa or Green Card must be sufficient to include your entire term of enlistment. As a non-citizen, you will not be allowed to reenlist beyond your first term of service, unless you first become a U.S. citizen. To become a commissioned Officer in the Navy Reserve, you must be a native or naturalized U.S. citizen.

After you serve 1 year honorably, you can apply for citizenship: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/theorderlyroom/a/citizenship.htm

If you joined active duty, you could apply as soon as you entered active duty (see "Service During Hostilities" section at the link above). That does not apply to the Reserves, however.
