Do you think people who are suffering from serious mental diesease can not have a successful life? My older sister is suffering from it. She was a qualified doctor, spent a normal life but her life was ruined because her relationship was broken up. For the last 15 years, she went through electric shocks, pills, sorta prision life at hospital, all her own. She got married with another guy but she was divorced when her hubby figured it out. So All I am asking here is that she will spend her future life like this forever? She is just 38.

My sister also suffers from a serious mental illness. Although her life has not gone according to plan, she is an important part of my family and enriches my life. Success can be judged in many different ways.

It does hurt to see that my sister has to struggle with things that most people can take for granted. But life is full of struggles for everybody. I don't know what the future holds for my sister, but neither do I know my own.

I also have hope that one day her illness will be better understood and better managed. We are just beginning to understand mental illness, and I pray that one day there will be a medication that is more effective for her.

I have a Uncle who is mentally ill and he has been married for almost 50 years to a lovely lady my Aunt who has the patience of Job. They travel all of the country and have big fun. He has had some very difficult moments but hey we all have difficult moments. Your sister will find somebody that will love her all of her even the lumps.

My best advice is to pray for her be there for her when she needs you to listen which I am sure you already are there for her. Just remember you cannot fix her life for her she is going to get hurt and fall down but it is OK she will get up and try it again just like the rest of us. Being mentally ill does not mean you cannot have a life it just makes it more interesting! What don't kill you makes you stronger.

I cannot say whether she will always be like this, but it is possible. If she will get help and actually try, then she might be able to get past it. If she is not committed to changing, she will always be the same. I am sorry. I know you are hurting. She is lucky to have someone care about her like you do. Unfortunately, you cannot help someone who doesn't want help.
