I'm certain that I'm not doing anything wrong but I can't seem to stretch beyond a certain point.

I feel nothing like what a stretching muscle feels like when I stretch beyond a certain point. It seems like if I push my self too far I might dislocate my joints. I've never pushed it that far though because it gets painful.

Is it possible that my joints are not able to do the splits?

The type of splits I am trying to do are, what I will call, "side splits". The one where you legs move outwards to the left and right, not forward and backwards.

Hi there

First thing is not to over do it and cause yourself damage that will take 3 months to mend. The secret to the splits is daily routine. 5 mins everyday is all you need. Yes the last 6 inch can be a bit of a bugger. But just stick at it and within a month or two you will be there. You need both flexible hamstrings and hip joints for the box splits. May i suggest you also incorporate other exercises that open up your hip joints. Sometimes my hip joints pop when I'm performing the box splits.

Just be careful not to over do it.

Best wishes

i don't think that you are doing anything wrong, although if you do push yourself too hard you will injure yourself. you may be pulling a muscle or something. flexibility is defined as range of motion in a joint; therefore you will be able to do it once you are more flexible. unless you have arthritis or something then everyone can do the splits. and yes, it used to feel like that on me too, but that was just because i was pushing myself too hard and pulled a muscle. just keep working at it (don't hurt yourself though) and you'll get there.

Start doing some static type hip and lower back exercises and see if that does not help. The lower back has a lot to do with this and that could be the problem. If that does not help then see your doctor and he will probably refer you to a sports medicine facility if that is the problem where they can give you a set of exercises to help with this. If not I am sure he can diagnose it tell you what your options are.

you mean stradle splits right? everyone has the capability to do the splits. you just have to make sure you stretch every day and work at them. eventually you will get them and it won't hurt at all. even though it may feel that your legs are going to rip off (happens to me all the time) still try and push your self. You will get them, just keep trying!!
