I'm going to the dentist in a week. I'm in pain now... taking Advil... rinsing with salt water. Just wondering if I should start antibiotics. Considering that I MAY need a root canal and that the tooth is sensitive to cold... it is currently sending an occasioanl sharp pain down my tooth, and I can't put cold air on it or it hurts. I waited until I had to resort to Advil because I hate taking meds... but what do you think about the Antibiotics? I just msgd my dentist asking her if she felt I should. Maybe the pain is there because there is an abcess forming and the abcess has no where to go because the tooth is closed. So maybe I should get antibiotics? Any dentists or RDAs out there that can advise? Thanks.

Pack in salt till you are home . Then with a tooth pick put Lysol into the carrie. Don't let the germs grow. In a week you will be at the dentist if the germs are allowed to grow he sends you home on antibiotics till the ball of poison in the gums is gone.

You shouldn't take antibiotics without first being diagnosed,.

If the tooth is developing and abscess a fistula may form on your gum (like a small pimple). This means the infection is draining.

Best to get in to see the DDS asap.

Most likely when you are able to visit the dentist they will determine whether or not you need antibiotics.
Is your face swollen? Then, yes, you need antibiotics! Make sure you mention to your dentist that your face is swollen and he/she should call in a script to your pharmacy.
If you are not swollen, then it is OK to wait until your appt. If you do become swollen before your appt. please call your dentist and he/she should call in antibiotics.
For now, salt water is a great antibacterial! Good luck!

if you are having sensitivity to cold, it means your tooth has worn out or a deep cavity but with out infection. If you have pain taking hot food, then you have an infection. Antibiotics will not help in your case, only pain killers like ibuprofen or diclofenic.

ANGELINA,

A SIMPLE CALL TO THE DENTIST WITH YOUR QUESTION IS IN ORDER.
THE DENTIST MAY WANT TO HAVE YOU START ON THAT PARTICULAR ANTIBIOTIC OR PRESCRIBE A DIFFERENT ONE. JUST CALL AND FIND OUT. HOWEVER,THIS TOOTH NEEDS ATTENTION A.S.A.P.
