My husband left for BMT three weeks ago. I still haven't gotten his packet so that I can get enrolled in DEERS. I know they fill those packets out while inprocessing, which means I should of gotten it by now. What should I do? Should I call his recruiter or just continue to wait. It's really important that I get it soon though because I need to get enrolled and get medical started because we stopped our other medical and now some medical problems have arised.

Okay I stopped the other medical because his recruiter told me to do that because I was supposed to be already enrolled by now.

three weeks is the absolute SOONEST you can expect to get the packet.. more like 4-6 in most cases. if the paperwork wasn't done the first week he was in processing, you can expect to wait even longer.

you cant do anything for yourself...with or without his packet unless you have a power of attorney..........even if you are enrolled in DEERS already by him (which you should be) you can usually enroll yourself in tricare but to get an ID or anything he needs to sign for you. also tricare doesnt start the day you enroll (unless its a newborn) for instance my husband and i got married on NOV 4, 02.....my tricare took affect Dec 1. if it had been after the 15th of Nov however it wouldnt have started till Jan 1st. So you are looking at between 2-6 weeks AFTER enrollment before you can use your tricare anyway.....his recruiter should have told you all of this. But anyway, the answer to the whole packet question is this.....you are a military spouse now....you are not entitled to ANYTHING regarding any kind of records or info unless your husband sends it to you himself or you have that power of attorney. When we PCS'd I wanted a copy of my records to hand carry (last time we PCS'd mine got lost between bases somehow) and I had to have my husband sign a form allowing me access to my own medical records.

I was under the impression until his has passed basic then you would not be covered anyways............most of the info HE has to fill out and really only needs you for the picture on the ID card.....you have to be on his page twos first and then enrolled into tricare [page twos is the same as deers] and for this he needs marriage certificate [certified copy] and any birth certificates for you and any children you have so if he did not leave with them send them NOW.

I would call his recruiter but to be honest I think he will tell you that this will have to wait until you go for hubby's passing out.

regards

I wasn't covered (as my husband told me..so maybe he was just yankin my chain) until he graduated basic training. I couldnt get my id until after he graduated.

You have to wait until hes done with basic then you will be all enrolled and he can give you the paperwork. You MIGHT be able to get a copy sent to you and go to tricare from there. But...as far as i know..that in itself can take up to half the time hes at basic! So...tough luck i think.

is it something thats really serious or something that can wait? if it can wait..i highly recommend waiting..or maybe getting in touch with the insurance you stopped. i had to do that for a few weeks before i got my deers stuff all set and ready to go.

That was probably not a good idea to cancel your other medical. It's takes time to process this stuff. There are a lot of military being processed into BMT. I hope you can hold out. You will now understand why most veterans are so against government run medicine. Enjoy.

You are already entered into the DEERS system. You can't do it, the Military member has to do it and he did when he entered your name, birthday, SSN, address into the system.

When you were entered into the system, you were automatically enrolled into Tricare Standard. You can find a doctor in your area that accepts Tricare. With this you will have a co-pay and a yearly deductible. Go to the tricare website to find one in your area. Once you do get the packet you can get your military ID card and change to Tricare Prime and Tricare Prime Remote.

call and find out from where he is based out of. There should be a contact at the base....if you don't know it then by all means, get in touch with the recruiter. He or she can direct you where to go from there.
