... one man was looking around helplessly. I joined in to find that 4 very young men were defending the J.W. movement to him and were very angry.
When I was very young I met a young man who got very incited when I tried to explain a theory to him . I yelled and swore at him because he was just being mean and not letting me talk.
I've since met some very nice J.W.'s and enjoyed thier company. I was raised to respect people of all walks.
Query ; Why do people get so riled up over salvation?
I mean If I tell you that I'll pray 4 U , does it make sense to be offended?

We all make assumptions .I have looked in the mirror alot since then.
I'll pray for you IS tantamount to "I love you" and want the best for you .
J.W. Is short for Jehovah's witness.

Let me see here. It is ok that you yell and swear at someone for not letting you talk.

You were raised to respect all people and you have met nice JW's.

Maybe instead of questioning others about why they get riled up you should be asking the person in your mirror that question.

Just a thought.

Yes. First off, if I wanted to pray, I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself, I don't need some self-righteous believer telling me he'll do it for me. My general response is, "I'll think for you!"

Second, I probably know more about your religion than you do - I know enough to know it makes no sense logically, and that's plenty, but I know more beyond that. I don't need to be saved from anyone except believers. I respond to peddlers of religion just as I'd respond to any obnoxious salesperson trying to push something I don't need or want - don't try and tell me you listen politely to every telemarketing pitch you hear. My time belongs to me, and if I tell you to stop wasting it with sales pitches - then STOP.

Finally, religions have such a vast history of oppressive and repressive acts, from mere censorship to murdering those who disbelieve (whether pure disbelief or belief in a competing deity/version of that deity) that those pushing them are no more deservibng of my respect than the neighborhood crack dealer - less, because I've never had a crack dealer show up at my door, uninvited, trying to sell me his crack.

I hope this brings about a glimmer of comprehension to you. Yes, you are being offensive. Stop it. If I want to know about your beliefs, I'll ask.

I think that some people associate God with war and destruction. So when someone says "I'll pray for you", they feel as if you're cursing them. I think some atheists see God the way Christians see Satan. Some but not all.

Telling someone who doesn't believe the same as you that you will pray for them is tantamount to my telling you that I will dance naked under the light of the next full moon on your behalf...

Some are just plain uncomfortable with the whole religious thing. I hate religion. Nothing has caused more strife. I am, however a Christian and I attend services of some type everyday.
God bless.............

Yes it is offensive.
Here's why: You are automatically assuming you have moral superiority over me because of your beliefs. That you need to pray for me must mean I'm a poor, deluded fool who is to be pitied. So you are setting up a dialog in which you automatically assume I am wrong and that my ideas can not possibly have the same validity as yours.
Yes. That is insulting.

Think about it....so much is at stake!
Faith is so personal. So much is at stake if we happen to be wrong. None of us want to believe that we could be wrong and risk burning in hell or have lived a pointless life.
That's why JW's and others refuse to believe there is a hell.....awfully convenient

Fear and ignorance. How dare you tell them something that they know is wrong!

In reality, the people who have the strongest wills, and who are most confident in their faith, are the ones who never have to raise their voice. They are assured of their faith, and do not need to demonstrate it by yelling or by using profanities.

No religion/sect has all the answers. I accept that.
People irritate me by thinking they have all the answers, or they are the only "saved" group.
I think maybe it is a self-defense mechanism, that maybe they are unsure too.

"I'll pray for you" doesn't normally offend people. It's the "I'll pray for you in the sincere hope that you'll turn from your evil ways and agree with me and thus not burn in Hell for eternity" that tends to get people upset.
