About 10-12 years ago,
A particular line of bananas were genetically engineered with
virus coat proteins or human antiviral antibody proteins.
I believe it was the small pox.
So children in third world countries can get immunized/be protected just by eating bananas readily available in their home countries.

Bananas are very susceptible to a particular deadly fungus.
Purhaps bananas can/have been transformed with an anti-fungal protein as well.

The bananas you get from your store are likely wild-type, non-engineered

The first GM banana was with attenuated Norwalk virus (that virus causes diarrhea) coat protein in 2000.

Since then they have begun testing for resistance to bacterial wilt and various fungal diseases that affect the crops. 2006
