I would never use a handy man that was not licensed. If you do, and something he did goes wrong, your insurance company will not pay out. As to how much should you pay, that would depend on where you live. I live in Iowa and I charge 30 dollars an hour. If I were to go to chicago, it would be around 60 per hour.

hoosierm, what's wrong with your brain? 20 bucks an hour and dont hire a guy unless he's driving a brand new pickup? The going rate for a good handyman is at least $60.00 an hour. You don't need a new pickup to do good work. Whether the man is licensed or not, usually your best bet is a friend or neighbor who's had work done by someone

Ouch! You live in LA, the home of a thousand "handymen". It really depends on their track record with the BBB and previous references what you would pay. If it sounds too high, (like $100.00 to replace a faucet washer), DON't HIRE THEM. The going rate for handymen across the nation is somewhere between 20.00 hr. to "time and materials' which the skies the limit on. Ask friends or relatives who they have used in the past or use the Yellow Pages and look for the ads endorsed by the BBB or Angies List. Don't hire anyone who asks for money up front or who drives an old station wagon or beat up truck. Alot of the time if it is a small or easy job you can do it yourself with books or on-line info. Good luck :)

what about a state like pa. where you dont have to be licensed...a piece of paper doesnt mean much out on the job...seek references and check out his work before you hire him...
