(The 2012 date applies to the US only)

Unlike over the air TV, there is no specific date that cable systems will change to all digital channels. The companies are required to maintain analog service until at least 2012, but they can meet this requirement by supplying customers with converter boxes.

By making the switch to all digital, the cable companies can offer more channels, so they have a motivation to switch.

Once a cable company switches to all digital, whether you can pick up anything without a cable box depends on what kind of digital system the cable company decides to use.

If they use a system called "clear QAM", then most newer TVs with digital tuners can receive them. I don't believe that the cheap ~$20 converter boxes that are coming out in Jan 2008 can receive QAM signals; they are meant for over the air TV only.

'digital' tv (HD) will be taking a more wide-spread affect in 2009 or 2011 (I'm not sure what the required year is, but it's not 'now')

she can still see regular cable channels with a box upgrade if she wishes to keep her current tv. I don't think you have to pay for it/pay extra for it, but for more accurate information for your particular situation...

You just need to contact your local cable provider.
