I have used spray bottles to squirt my male cat when he goes near the tree. He likes the taste of BITTER APPLE, yea, i know. Orange peels, citrus sprays, pepper, and powder repellants have no effect. He doesn't knock the tree over, but he weighs 20 pounds and creats total destruction when he "plays". I'm going crazy. PLease help!!!

Thanks so far everyone, but I need to add that he likes water, can't lock him up during the day, and he's kind of mean and opinionated, and you can yell at him until yourblue in the face. and it's an artificial tree, if that helps any.

Put vinegar mixed with water in a spray bottle. More water than vinegar though. And every time he starts to get near the tree or starts "playing" just spray him in the face. Pretty soon he will learn not to go near the tree. It worked on my cat.

There is another product besides the Bitter APple its called No Bite Yuck.. Myc ats adore Bitter Apple too so I use that.. Make sure when you squirt him you either get his behind or his face..Another option is to place double sided tape all around the base of the tree. He will hate that and it worked with my boy Charlie. You might also try spraying instant freeze hairspray it makes the floor sticky and the cat reluctant to step on it

We have the same problem. he bites the presents and get all in the tree. last year, when he was little, he used to climb up in the tree!!! unfortunately i dont know what to tell you. My husband got him with the fly swatter one day and that seemed to have worked (he surprised him by popping him, didn't hurt him!!). what if you just spray water on him. I think most cats don't like water... but if nothing else worked.... i leave my cat outside during the day so he is never alone in the house...

good luck

last year my cat climbed to the top of the tree. Nutter, she also likes to chew the wires of the fairy lights. I have a table will bells and other Christmas stuff tied to it that she plays with to distract her. When she does she gets treats and fuss over the other side of the room. Every time she goes near the tree she gets shaken at (a plastic bottle with stones in!) she hates this so has kinda learnt. May not work with boy cats (who usually are ruled by their tummies!) but worth a try...good luck x

What about putting the tree inside a baby's playpen? Worked for us. The vinegar & water works well but must be sprayed in their face.

attempt wrapping the backside of the tree with tin-foil... cats frequently do no longer in basic terms like the sensation of digging their claws into it (my pal taught her cat to resign scrathing the furnishings by way of using tin foil) wish it facilitates... additionally, have you ever tried spraying him with a water bottle each and every time he gets close to the tree?

Move the tree to a room with a door that can be shut. It's your only 100% controllable option.

sorry to tell you but you're not gonna get him to stay away from it. we have two cats on 10lbs and one 22lbs they play in the tree the whole time it is up. we have tried so many things to keep them out, but after a while he'll get bored of it and leave it alone.my cats have broken so many ornaments and what not, just take your good ones down.

i have the same problem...20lb cat that gets into everything! i've started clapping my hands once really loud to get his attention when he's doing something he shouldn't. he usually runs because he's startled by the loud sound. i don't know how long he'll respond to that but it's working for now.
