so my dad says that he has this smell that he keeps smelling everywhere he goes...the house, office, car....whatever. He says it smells kind of like exhaust. It's freaking him out. He has a diesel truck and my mom told him maybe that's why he smells it all the time but he doesn't think so...any clue why or what this could be? Could this mean anything?

I think it has to do with the olfactory receptors and sometimes when you are around smells that are really strong, like diesel fuel, it can stick to your senses, it isn't really anything that he needs to worry about, maybe try telling him to hang an air freshener in the car or something to lessen the strength of the smell of the diesel...

This sounds like a chronic sinus infection to me. I think your Dad should talk to his doctor about it. If it is, the doctor can prescribe antibiotics which should clear up his problem. There are other medical conditions to which you may be alerted by a nasal smell but these are more unlikely. I think this will turn out to be what I've suggested. I know when I have a sinus infection I get a bad smell all the time.

I know that if a car has an exhaust leak and a person is driving in it with the windows closed, it gets in the car and makes your clothes, skin and hair smell. If it really smells like exhaust, tell your dad to check his car for exhaust leaks or broken exhaust pipes.

If he is in and around his truck all the time, I am sure that is why. When my son was young, he worked at Pizza Hut and guess what he smelled like? Pizza Hut! Even he could smell it. This is probably hard on his lungs though.

Diesel fuel smells... it's most likely the fumes sticking to his clothes, or his truck could have a leak somewhere.

He may be smelling pollution and be sensitive to smells that most of the population is not. There are several genetically linked odors that only part of the population can smell.

Sometimes it can mean seizure. If he starts slurring words or going off into a 'daze' or acting extra confused call a doctor. If it seems suddenly really serious go to the ER

I've heard smelling smoke is a symptom of an impending stroke or seizure. I'd have him visit his doctor.
