For a long time, I would bite my nails down to the skin. Just recently, I finally stopped biting them and they have grown very long. However, they are not white like they should be. They are completely clear! They are really long now, but they are either discolored or have no color at all. Is this normal? How can I treat this?

I don't use nail polish that often, so it can't be that discoloring them. I don't smoke or do anything that would make them such a strange color.

It could have to do with your diet. If so, you need to get more vitamins and minerals (especially minerals) in your diet. Try a multivitamin.

Another possible reason is a fungal infection. This is easily cured by a prescription pill (don't try the topical treatments, they don't work). See your doctor.

If not, I know of a couple of genetic diseases that cause discolored fingernails (among other symptoms). Again, you might want to take it to a doctor

I wouldn't worry about it. I didnt stop biting my nails untl i was 18. When they would grow out, they would be really brittle, and break easily. My nails were also clear. I gave it some time, and now my nails grow thicker. My tips are an off-white color now. Try eating more things w/protein, and vitamin E. I dont knw what to say about the discoloration....

They're hydrated. Nails are made of keratin as as they grow out, the keratin dries out. If they're clear, especially close to the nail bed, that means that the keratin in your nails is hydrated.

Are they really thin? If so, you need more calcium in your diet, and that should help to make them stronger, and make them white.
