they are taught that if they even so slightly question god they are sinners and shall burn in hell forever. they are scared. god keeps them in line much like an abusive person keeps there partner around:
"if you stick around i may beat you up a bit, but if you leave I'm gona kill you"-abusive partner
"if you believe in me i may have you stone your neighbor to death if he turns out to be gay, or i may have you burn your daughter if she decides to be a prostitute, but if you leave me and don't teach your children my word you will burn forever."-what i hear from the bible

Maybe you can do like he Greeks and Romans and go carve on out a board or rock if you don't like the real one. Beside it is humans that are the perpetrators of the evil you are talking about and yes Satan is giving them the direction NOT God!
God LOVED us stupid sinners so much he sent his son Jesus to DIE on the cross in PAYMENT FOR ALL OUR SINS! Now all that is required is believing in God and accepting Jesus as Lord, repentance and living right are part of that. Maybe you just find the idea of being a Christian too hard... try reading what Paul went through, shipwrecks, beatings, prison and death, all BECAUSE he was a Christian! Being a Christian isn't easy in this unreasonable and prejudiced culture but it is the only path to salvation.
I have seen his hand on my life so many times and in so many ways that God is real and for some reason he loves us and wants us with him in heaven.
You can call it unreasonable but there are only 2 choices in this test called life and here see the options....

Here is a vision of the other choice.

May you find the TRUE God and not the one of your imagination...

I am not what I ought to be;
I am not what I would like to be;
I am not what I hope to be.
But I am not what I once was,
and by the grace of God, I am what I am.

I have said this earlier this evening.....
If you seek the negative you will find it...
If you seek the positive you will find it...
You can look at all the wrong that has been committed in the "name of religion" ... and then blame God... guess thats your choice...
But I have seen things that convince me that GOD IS REAL.
To cite one example.... I was a chaplin at a local hospital.
and I prayed over a little old lady... who was about to die.
I looked at all those monitors....and based on what I saw.. thought to myself..yep she is toast ( so much for a compassionate heart with that thought)
... I always prayed that God would be merciful (take her quickly) or I asked for healing.... (let her live) ... The Dr. and I had talked just before we brought the family into ICU.... Once she was to be "unplugged".... 10 minutes at the most. We prayed...
Most of the family left.... except two grandsons who were going to see Granny through to the end....At that point she was "unplugged"... her time of death was at hand.
At 10 minutes I looked at the monitors... and something was amiss... her heart was starting to beat at a regular rate...her breathing was beginning to be normal... at 15 minutes she was talking to the Dr.
She spent another week in the hospital... 6 weeks in a nursing home...And then she went back to her own home for another 3 years before she died.
Ok..you can declare a coincidence and deny that there is a God..
Or you can look for the positive....
what you are looking for??

The bible tells us so, to go out and teach the word to save all of mankind. I do not agree with you thoughts on if he exist or not but I do beleive, but I do need more study. I am also open minded to know that most people will never believe because of the lack of proof. I enjoy a good part of the bible, but some of it simply sounds unbelievable. People will blame Satan for everything that happens they do not understand and its a mircle from God if they like it or its a good thing. People do not understand most things so they have to believe something positive even if there is no proof. Also reading other answers some do try to tell you not to question it, but in my case that is an open invitation to ask questions

Read all of the answers provided here and you will see whether you are religious, agnostic, or athiest there is a large chance that you will meet someone along the road that is unreasonable. Unreasonable people do not belong to just one group - they belong to all groups. I have met religious people who are close minded and I have met religious people who are very open to others opinions. Same goes with athiests and agnostics.

If you'd like to level a reasonable question about the God of the Bible, you might want to read it first. After all, that would seem the reasonably intelligent thing to do.

God is love...yet, there are eternal truths..it is not meant to be a threat. The bible is meant to warn you of what will happen if you refuse God and follow your own will.

Can people NOT figure out for themselves that God DOES exist, and that it isn't Him that tortures us, but other human beings, including ourselves, that are the torturers??

it's not that they're unreasonable (and btw, i think you're referring to judaism/christianity; in other religions, there isn't necessarily just one god.) it's just that, like most people, they need answers to the deep questions of life- why are we here? how did we get here? etc. and the so called people (i'll stop bullshitting here- Christians) who claim that the war in iraq is a mission from god, killing is justifed by the bible and so and so...those aren't real christians.
i just wish people would stop scapegoating christians and other religions in general.

I'm sorry you feel this way. I hope one day you will come to know the same God that I know - the real God, the God that loves you and cares about you and doesn't really want anything from you - except your faith.

You sound like an atheist, not an agnostic.
Agnostic:
-One who believes that it is impossible to know whether there is a God.
