I agree with the others that it's very likely an oral problem; your kitty is less active because he/she doesn't feel well.
My cat Kiwi once began drooling copiously for reasons I couldn't identify; a quick trip to the vet revealed an ulcer on the roof of her mouth. A few days of antibiotics, and she was fine.
As you're aware, your kitty really needs a veterinary diagnosis.

Take your cat to the vet so he or she can do an oral exam.
Your cat may have an infected tooth that needs to be removed.
Your cat may be suffering from stomatitis which is when the oral cavity is ulcerated and painful.
Both things can cause a cat great distress and pain.
Your cat should be seen soon by a vet to rule out other causes
Make sure your cat is eating and drinking.
If it stops either it is an emergency situation.

Hi Heather...ptyalism (excessive drooling) may be caused by several possibilities such as periodontal tooth and gum disorders, kidney failure, Damage or paralysis of the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve V), accidental ingestion of a toxin, etc. If bad breath is also noticeable it may be as a result of periodontal disorders of the teeth and gums: http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/news/badBreath.htm

it might have a bad tooth. that will cause drooling, and less activity. look in it's mouth, or watch it eat dry cat food to see if it looks like it's in pain. it also could have a sore throat. pets can catch colds, have allergies, etc. call your local humane society to get a referral to a low cost vet in your area. i hope your baby feels better soon.
