I could not find a direct source to connect the quote to EM Forster. While it is published on many quotation sites, the fact is I couldn't find when or where he might have said it.

Most interestingly, in my search for a Forster source, I did stumble upon amazingly similar quotes in two other books, one by the mythologist, Joseph Campbell, and the other by a grief counselor, Phyllis Kosminsky.

"We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us. The old skin has to be shed before the new skin can come." ~~Joseph Campbell (1904-1987)

"A Joseph Campbell Reader: Reflections on the Art of Living," by Joseph Campbell and Diane K. Osbon, ed., 1991 as noted in the book, "Wisdom for the Soul: Five Millennia of Prescriptions for Spiritual Healing" by Larry Chang, 2006, pg. 606

"To truly live without fear, we must be willing to let go of the hope that life is different from what it is." ~~Phyllis Kosminsky

"Getting Back to Life When Grief Won't Heal" by Phyllis Kosminsky, 2007, pg. 199.

Good luck with your paper.
