In the US, the Prius, and 1980s and early 90s Tercels. Possibly the Corolla FX as well.
Worldwide, add the 1.4 liter diesel Aygo, and probably at least one of the Kei cars from Daihatsu (a subsidiary of Toyota).

I have a 2006 Toyota Corolla CE with an automatic transmission. If I drive it really hard the worst gas mileage I get is 32 mpg. The highest I've gotten so far was 40mpg in a mix of 75% city/25% highway driving. To get that 40mpg I was hypermiling without doing anything illegal or extremely dangerous (like drafting semi trucks).
On average though my gas mileage is typically 36mpg.
The hypermiling I did...
No speed above 55 mph.
Manually cycle the A/C. Leave it off until I couldn't take it anymore then turn it back on for 5 - 10 min.
Coast down to red lights to make a green. Racing to a red light (as many drivers do) is pointless and wastes gas.
No fast acceleration.
Coast down to stop signs trying to time it so I'm next. If not at least I didn't have to wait multiple turns to be first in my lane.
With winter coming on I'll try another round of hypermiling and see if I can get better than 40mpg. :)

The Yaris gets the best gas mileage. You can get it as a 4 door car or a hatchback. They might not seem like you get a lot of room but they are pretty comfy inside. You get a lot of trunk space and they drive like a V6.
I love mine. I can fill up the tank and drive all the way to San Jose and back (over 60 miles around trip) and still have a full tank of gas.
Toyota Corolla's are the same way.
The Prius is a hybrid.
Good luck.

The Toyota Camry gets around 35-40mpg, which is larger than the Echo, and more luxurious also. The Toyota Corolla also gets about the same mpg ratings. It also depends on how you drive the vehicle. If you drive it like the guys do that do all the vehicle test drives cut the expected mileage in half.

Well I have always thought my 2003 Matrix was pretty good on the gas milege. But what I do know is that it varies withthe type of driving I do. More speed, running the air, and poorer quality gas effects this. I usually get a good 30 mpg hwy going 65-70. City driving a little better. But when I get gasoline from Oregon my mpg increases to about 40 going the same speed. Someone told me it was because Oregon does not have all those crappy additives in thier fuel like California does.

I have a 2007 Toyota Yaris Liftback, automatic, and I get 35-40 miles per gallon. The Yaris debuted on the US market in April of 2006 and replaced the unpopular Echo. Friends don't let friends buy Echos. I love my Yaris. It has plenty of room, is easy to park anywhere, and has plenty of get up and go. It is comfortable to drive for long periods and I can't think of one thing to complain about.

Most of the car questions asked here can be answered simply by researching or going to google but no, people still want to be spoon fed answers. Who needs a plethora of information on the internet when you can use Yahoo! answers to have other people do the research for you.

Likely the hybrid Preuss. And they have some very small cars that get almost equal to the hybrids.
