A couple of friends and I are taking a trip to Manhattan on Saturday. We have a couple of places in mind that we would definitely like to see.

First of all, Canal Street - we want COACH bags and gucci, and all sorts of stuff like that!! Where on Canal street is the best place for this stuff? Also, what train would we take to get there?

Secondly, we would like to visit The Village. We want to go to head shops and naughty stores! = ) Where would be the best place in the Village for this kind of thing? What trains would we take to get there?

Third, we'd like to go to the Museum of Natural History, same as before, what trains would we take to get there?

Also, my parents are telling me to go to China town, lots of fun and good shopping, where is China town located??

Any suggestions for any other places to visit (of course we are seeing the Christmas tree too while we're there) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much for your help!

Let me break it down by each paragraph....

Canal Street - This is the "home" of the knockoff designer stuff! It's one of the main streets of Chinatown (which goes into your last question). By Broadway and going east (towards Chinatown) you will see the vendors either outside or in those small "closet" type stores selling their wares. The "N", "Q", "R", "W", "J", "M", "Z" or "6" trains will get you right there.

Village - For the "head shops" and the naughty stores....Bleecker Street right off 6th Avenue. If you are into the leather, whips and chain sort of thing along with other naughty stuff...there's a store right off that corner..I forget the name but it is legendary. They may have the "stuff" you are looking for as well. Though if you are out of luck finding a head shop on Bleecker, get yourself over to the East Village and St. Marks Place. You'll definitely find something along that strip.

To Bleecker Street....take the "A, B, C, D, E, F, or V" train to West 4th Street. Then walk down 2 blocks (south, like heading to Ground Zero) and Bleecker is there. If you are looking to get to the East Village, a cab ride from Bleecker is not expensive to do...but if you are into the subways, take the "6" to Astor Place then walk eastbound towards Lafayette and Cooper Union and you will be right there.

For the Museum of Natural History.....you can either take the "B" or "C" train to the 81st Street-Museum Of Natural History station which drops you off right at the museum. Or you can take the "1" train to 79th Street and walk 2 blocks east (as if you were heading to Central Park) to get to the museum.

Finally...Chinatown. Since you are on Canal looking for the knockoffs, head over to Mulberry Street or Mott Street. Right there you are in the heart of Chinatown. Other streets in the area...Bayard, Elizabeth, Bowery.

Not too far from Chinatown (actually you can take the "6" train from Canal Street, change at Brooklyn Bridge for the "4" or "5" trains and head south to Fulton Street), you can visit the South Street Seaport / Pier 17. (head towards the East River as if you are looking for the Brooklyn Bridge.) If you really want to see something mind blowing, check out the Bodies exhibit (actual human cadavers).

Enjoy NYC!

1) For canal street: print a copy of the subway map and keep with you: www.mta.info
Many lines stop on Canal & Broadway, so check to find out which subway is closer to you.

2) For East Village stores the main street is St. Marks starting 4th Avenue and going down all the way to 1st Avenue. that's where all the stores are.
Take the 6 train to Astor Place and walk towards the East.
For West Village go to Bleecker Street (check map to see which subway. I don't remember).

3) For the MNH museum take the C line or the 1 or 9. (again see the map. C is the blue line. 1 & 9 are the red line)

4) Chinatown is good only to buy fake things and little gifts. Besides that don't spend any more time there. It is super busy, too many people, people trying to get you into their stores. I really don't like that area, however you should go to do your shopping and get out!

Other suggestions: Yes, I have. Go ice skating at the Rockefeller Center or at the Bryant Park. It is super fun.

I am not sure how old you are, but if you are over 21 explore the night life in NYC because it is the best. Don't waste your night in times Square because it is just for tourists. Go where locals are such areas are: Meat Pack District, Soho, East and West Village, and Chelsea.

Don't forget to go shop at Zara, H&M they are cheap and offer fun trendy clothes.

First of all Canal Street and Chinatown - to get there take any subway line that stops at Canal Street. Once there, you can walk east to west, or vice versa, and check out the shops. You want COACH and Gucci, then Canal Street is the place to get it at bargin prices.

For the Museum of Natural History - take the B or C trains to 81st Street-Museum of Natural History and exit at the rear of the station which will lead you in to the museum.

Other suggestions:
-a broadway show, the theaters are now open again
-The Christmas Spectacular at Radio City
-The NBC store at Rockefeller Center
-The Hershey Chocolate Store in Times Square (if anyone has a sweet tooth)
-Souvinior shops (if you want a piece of new york to take home with you)

one thing i will suggest while in new york and if this is your first time in nyc is get a map of manhattan from the tourist office at 53rd street and 7th avenue that way you will be formiliar with manhattan. the maps includes the subway line to any destination in the city.

another thing i will suggest is getting a 1 day metrocard for each of you. that way you all don't have to be paying $2 everytime you need to get on the subway or bus. the metrocard is a transit card that allows you to ride the subway and bus. it is only avaliable at the vending machine in subway station, but try the tourist office, they may have some in stock.

below are link to the tourist office and new york city transit's website.

enjoy your visit to the big apple

I'm not going to argue with the advice here, except to say forget about Times Square, as it is chain store central. Yawnorama.

Soho is filthy with designer stores and expensive shops. The Village has cheaper stores.

On the Lower East Side, on Rivington Street, is Babeland, a feminist sex toy shop (it's very tasteful, but has lots of good toys). It's about a 10-minute walk from the Lower East Side stop on the FV trains. Walk along Houston to where 1st Avenue becomes Allen Street, turn right (onto Allen), walk about two blocks, turn left on Rivington, pass the TEANY shop (owned by Moby), and there's Babeland.
