It is a matter of the eye and brain interpreting letters incorrectly. To a mildly dyslexic person, a "b" looks like a "d". To a severely dyslexic person, a "b" looks like a "p", etc. Conventional therapists say it's untreatable. Bob Doman at the National Academy for Child Development (www.nacd.org) insists that most cases of dyslexia are a problem with brain dominance or patterning. My husband is dyslexic. He is supposed to be left-handed, but is right-handed. His brain works less efficiently when dominance does not jive with eyes and hands. A dyslexic is reading/interpreting words "the long way" ; similar to going from Miami Florida to Jacksonville Florida by way of San Francisco! Their processing is inefficient and cumbersome, often because of a simple problem with dominance or brain patterning. Many children who do not crawl have learning disabilities because crawling is an integral part of brain patterning. Learning to walk without crawling is like learning long division before learning multiplication or subtraction. It sounds bizarre, but check it out at www.nacd.org. (I hope that made some sense!)

It is kind of a catch-all term for just about any kind of reading difficulty; lexicon meaning words, and dys meaning having a problem with something.
